Bronze Boy fit for Waimate
PA Dunedin Bronze Boy showed encouraging fitness for his return to racing when he worked at Wingatui on Monday morning. Ridden by Graeme Scott, who has the mount in the Te Waimate Steeplechase at the Waimate Hunt meeting on Saturday, Bronze Boy jumped two steeplechase fences in the centre and three on the outside of the course and worked round to the winning post. Bronze Boy had threequarters of a length on Laome at the finish with three lengths to Melaka. Melaka had jumped to the front on the course proper. Bronze Boy won three races over country last season including the Hunt Cup at Riccarton in which he was ridden by Scott, who can claim I.skg for him at Waimate. Rocky Leigh, who reappears in the Cochrane Memorial Handicap at
: Waimate, was involved in (the only fiat gallop of consequence on Monday. Rocky Leigh did not handle the heavy ground as well as Waronui, who had the upper hand at the finish of 800 metres in 53.25ec. Gate Girl was in a gap further back. Sir James has been sidelined after he pulled a shoe and stood on a nail. Lomond Note did a strong round on the course proper though bandaged for an infection in his hind leg which caused him to miss his race on Saturday. Jim Pankhurst endorses the move to standardise the closing time for acceptances. Pankhurst missed the. acceptance for Candyboy at Waimate under the impresI sion that the closing time i was 3 p.m. Waimate is one of the few 'clubs to close acceptances at (2 p.m., which will become j the standard next season, i Candyboy needs a win to be 'eligible for the Winter Cup.
