Talks on new P.M. for Italy
NZPA-Reuter Rome Pres : dent Leone has opened consultations to appoint a Prime Ministerdesignate and replace Italy’s two-month-old caretaker Government.
The man expected to get. the job is a Christian Democrat, Mr Giulio Andreotti, aged 57, who is the Budget and Economic Planning Minister, and a former Prime Minister. President Leone’s consultations are expected to end by tomorrow.
Mr Andreotti, whose came out on top in the June 20 elections with 38.8 per cent of the vote, is thought by many to be the Christian Democrat with the closest links to the Socialists, whose support is vital to any new Government.
The Communists won 34.2 per cent of the vote and the Socialists 9.6 per cent. But it is increasingly expected in political circles that any new government’s programme, particularly regarding the economic crisis, will have to be agreed in advance with the Communists, who increased their vote by more than seven per cent.
