Strong golf team
The Canterbury selectors (Messrs M. J. McNally, R. C. Townshend and R. C. Morton) obviously hold the strength of Buller-Westland golf in high regard. After the strong showing by the combined team at this year s Freyberg Rose Bowl tournament in Timaru, the Canterbury selectors have become circumspect and named a team consisting of 12 experienced and prominent Woodward Cup players. Three members of the victor* ous Canterbury Freyberg team— Geoff Saunders, Dennis Beggs and Colin Hoole —occupy the top three positions in that order, and the reserve. Murray Brown, is at four. The provincial matchplay champion, James Angus, is placed after Brown.
The other two members of the Freyberg team, Bruce Taylor and Simon Robinson were overseas and were not available. The annual contest will be played at Coringa on August 14 and 15. The team in playing order, is:—
G. C. Saunders D. L. Beggs, C. W. Hoole, M. G. Brown. J. M. Angus; J. L. Allin. W. I. Tucker, E. R. M. Richards, N. M. Griffiths B. M. .Alexander A. K. Hynd (captain). N. L. Bain. Reserves: B. J. Cotton, D. J. Houitham.
Manager: Mr B. V. Glubb. The selectors are leaving little to risk in also naming their Town team for the annual match against Country at Weedons on August 29. Country’s last success was in 1972 and, in the intervening years, Town has had three crushing wins. The Town team for this years encounter is the strongest available and should score another convincing win. In playing order, it is: Saunders (captain), Hoole. Broun Angus Tucker, J. N. Williamson' D. R. Griffith, S. W. Street, J. T. Boys, R. M. Vincent, B. D. Petherick, J. W. Prebble, M. E. Street. J. A. Orr, J. I. Dixon, B. K. Street. Reserves: L. P. Martin S. D. Smith. M. R. Pitman. Man-’ ager: Mr R. T. Challis. .
Endeavours by the North Canterbury and Central Canterbury Sub-assoeiations to enter golf teams representing clubs in their areas in next season’s senior Woodward Cup Inter-club competition are unlikely- to succeed—at least for 1977. Clubs had been asked to advise the Canterbury association of their feelines towards the nibassociation teams being allowed to compete in the championship. The convener Of the match committee <Mr R.
