N.A.C. will choose 'the best’
PA Wellington Procedures to select the final 10 applicants for appointments as pilots would be the same as in the past, and the best people would be selected for the vacancies, said the general manager of N.A.C. (Mr D. A. Patterson). He was commenting on a report from Auckland that senior N.A.C. pilots felt that the first woman employed to take the controls of an airliner would have to be “exceptional”. “We have had 180 applications for 10 positions,” Mr Patterson said, “and two of these are from women. The list has been reduced to 75, and they have been interviewed.” Mr Patterson said that from these 75, a short list of 23 was being chosen to go for physical examination and final selection. “It is from these 23 finalists that we will select the 10 to fill the vacancies. “I must stress one point again,” Mr Patterson said.; “the procedure about this; particular selection will be 1 as in the past. We will select the best people for the] vacancies and no prior information will be given, as; these matters are entirely] personal between the airline! and the applicant.”
