Steady players win bridge

By

J. R. WIGNALL

Players from most leading South Island bridge clubs took part at the week-end in the Canterbury main centre pairs championship run by the Christchurch Contract Bridge Club. The early pace was set by J, J. Wain and M. Sadd, of Blenheim, with a fine first session score, after which they faded. The second session belonged to B. R. Anderson (Christchurch) and D. H. Humphries (Wellington), who consequently took the lead, but they too finished indifferently. Eventually Mrs J. Evitt and W. A. Sadler, by virtue of three steady scores, won the tournament by a comfortable margin, beating several internationals and New Zealand masters in the process. The runners-up were Mrs J Jones (Otago) and Mrs R. P. Kerr (Christchurch), while Mrs R. J. Eckersley and Mrs J. Thomas (Christchurch) were third. The best of the visiting pairs were H. Levy and D. McCaughan (Dunedin).

Rugby.—The Rotorua rugby club Pirates had endured heavy defeats ift competition this season, but none compared to the astonishing score inflicted on the senior seconds on Saturday. Walkite B chalked up a mammoth 134-0 win over the luckless side.
