Cassidy retains title

The former Canterbury table tennis representative, Ken Cassidy, retained his title from a large field which Competed for the Canterbury Working Men’s Clubs singles championship at the weekend.

Cassidy met the highranked Canterbury player, Bruce Clark, in the final. After they shared the first two games, Clark was well placed to win the title when he led 15-10 in the deciding game.

But Cassidy, well-known for his tenacity and tight defence, recovered splen-

didly. Aided by several missed smashes by Clark, he won the third game, 21-19. lan Urquhart and Harry Taylor tried hard in the A grade doubles, but were beaten by the experienced pair, Cassidy and Ray Mercer, 23-25, 19-21.

More than 160 players from the different clubs in Christchurch competed in the annual tournament. Results were:—

beat R. H. Loudon (Kaiapol). Semi-finals: Cassidy beat Hanton; Clark beat Urquhart. Final: Cassidy beat Clark, 21-16, 13-2 L 21-19. Doubles.—Semi-finals: H. F. Taylor and Urquhart (Woolston) beat B. Morris and Clark (Kaiapoi); R. W. R. Mercer and Cassidy (Richmond) beat Condliffe and N. Inglis (Christchurch). Final: Cassidy and Mercer beat Taylor and Urquhart, 25-23. 21-19. B grade.—Singles (final): G. Olive (Papanui) beat G. Rapiey (Hornby), 21-16, 19-21, 21-16. Doubles (final): Olive and A. McNabb (Papanui) beat C. Earl and R. Sheridan (Woolston), 18-21, 21-18, 22-20. C grade.—Singles (final): B. Fitzgerald (Hoon Hay) beat I. Carlyle (Woolston), 21-18, 21-19. D grade.—Singles (final): R. Bell (Papanui) beat P. Fraser (Woolston), 13-21, 21-17, 21-14.
