Talks on U.S. arms for Zaire
NZPA-Reuter Kinshasa The United States Defence. Secretary (Mr Donald Rumsfeld) ha- arrived in Kinshasa to discuss with President Mobutu Sese Seko the possible sale of United: States tanks and artillery Jo I Zaire, amid Zairean concern over the large number of Soviet weapons in Angola. Soviet tanks and armoured personnel carriers were sup--8 lied to help the Popular fovement for the Liberation of Angola and a 13.000-man Cuban expeditionary force win the civil war against two pro-Western Angolan movements. The sources said Zaire wanted the United States to sell H. tanks and artillery to strengthen its ground force because of the huge Angolan armoury . Zaire’s defence requirements would be discussed in detail during the two-day talks with President Mobutu and other senior Zaire officials. Western publications on Zaire say that it has no tanks at present.
