‘Justice act experimental’

PA Auckland The former Minister of Justice (Dr Finlay) said last night that the Labour Party would be readv to consider changes to the Criminal Justice Amendment (No. 2) Act provided that they did not alter the objects of the legislation. From editorial comment he had seen in the last two days, Dr Finlay said, he thought that the press had increasingly come around, perhaps reluctantly, to the view that the objects of the legislation were admirable.

However, there were reservations as to how it

was working in a practical sense.

Dr Finlay said the legislation, when introduced, was experimental and unprecedented. Labour had ahvaj s been nrepared to consider reviewing it. “My own feeling is that it is working reasonably well,’’ he said. He did not think the standard of court reporting had suffered. He would be quite prepared to listen to any changes that might improve the practical application of the legislation, but he was not prepared to specify any changes he would like to see.
