Minister favours levy on liquor
PA Wellington The Minister of Justice (Mr Thomson) believes an alcoholic liquor advisory council should be financed by a levy struck “across the board” on all liquor. He revealed his thinking in a speech last night to the annual conference of the Licensing Trusts Association at Oamaru. “We have yet to consider the exact machinery provisions for collecting such a levy. But no particular section of the liquor industry will be singled out to finance the activities of the council in the manner suggested by the Royal Commission on the liquor industry.” The commission suggested that the council should be financed by a 3 per cent levy on liquor purchases made by district licensing trust taverns, chartered clubs, and possibly by wholesalers.
