Epilepsy week

Epilepsy. Week began in Christchurch last evening with a panel discussion in which a doctor, a social worker, a Rehabilitation League worker, and an epileptic discussed the public’s lack of knowledge of the disease.

Dr T. P. Casely said there was a need to 'change the public’s conception of the disease. The difficulty of classifying the disease added to the public ignorance about it. A significant proportion of epilepsy cases still had unknown causes.

Mrs D. Armstrong, a social worker for the Epilepsy Association, said that about 80 per cent of all epileptics were normal in other respects and most of these people held jobs. About 80 people attended the meeting, which was opened by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr Hamish Hay). Parents and teachers from 100 schools in and around Christchurch had been invited to attend.

The objects of Epilepsy Week are to educate the public through work in schools and service clubs as well as by direct contact. The Canterbury Savings Bank will have a window display featuring aspects of epilepsy.

The week will end on Friday with a street appeal. Anyone able to help as a collector is asked to telephone 843-936.
