Blind want means test abolished

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. If a blind woman marries a sighted man she automatically loses her pension, and a blind man loses his pension if his sighted wife starts work. These are two anomalies that the Dominion Association of the Blind will ask the Government to rectify by abolishing the means test.

The national secretary (Mr C. White) told the association’s conference that this was one group of the seriously disabled which was unfairly discriminated against. The association will also ask the Government to; waive the customs duty and sales tax on certain imported sound and mechanical; equipment for blind people.
