Change in billiards
A new format will be introduced for this year’s Canterbury billiards championship, which begins later this month. Instead of the usual “sud-
den death” draw, section play will be employed. There will be four sections, each containing four players, who will all meet. The top two players in each section qualify for the quarter-finals. Eight players have been seeded and they go straight
into the section draw. The remaining 18 entrants will meet in pre-section games to fill the other eight vacancies.
The section rounds will be played on Saturday and Sunday of Queen’s Birthday week-end, with the quarterfinals and the first two hours of the semi-finals on Sunday afternoon and evening. The semi-finals will conclude on Monday afternoon and the final will begin in the evening and be completed the following night. The seeded players are Brian Kirkness, the titleholder, 1, Eric Simons 2, Bill Adams 3, Bill Burney 4, David Meredith 5, Dick O’Callaghan 6, Graham Foster 7, Doug Henderson 8.
