Heavy snow on passes
Heavy’ snow in the Arthur’s Pass-Craigiebum area caused motorists to be delayed for several hours yesterday. Chains were required to negotiate the pass. and several motorists from Canterbury without them were advised to turn back. Snow also fell heavily’ on the Lewis Pass yesterday, and it was still snowing
there late last evening. About 20 cars and a tourist bus were delayed on the western side of Porter’s Pass for three hours yesterday, after about Ift of snow fell in this area during the day. Ministry’ of Works vehicles worked most of the day clearing snow. About 4in to sin of snow fell over most of the Arthur’s Pass area. More problems were expec -
ted last evening, with a heavy frost predicted. “If it freezes during the night, there could be a serious problem in the morning.” a Ministry of Works spokesman said, A police bus returning from Greymouth to Christchurch yesterday, spent the night at Otira rather than tackle the steep Otira side of Arthur’s Pass.
