Eastern shippers remain intent on using Port Chalmers rather than Lyttelton in their proposed container service to Japan, in spite Lyttelton’s present substantial two-way trade with this country.
The vitality of the Lyttelton-. lil ? k was highlighted yes-, terday when four snips servicing the trade were loading and dis-i at Lyttelton. The Emboli is discharging 6370 tons of knocked-down cars and the Recife Maru discharged: •00 tons of genera] cargo and loaded, 900 tons of general cargv i and 1700 bales of wool, and the Japan Kauri has 1580 tons of general to discharge for both Lyttelton and Dunedin. The J Japan Kauri is also loading reefer and general cargo for both ports' at Lyttelton to help the vessel, maintain her schedule. The Turakina sailed vesterdayj after discharging 511 tons of gene~al cargo and loading 600 tons of reefer and 450 tons of genera! cargo. However. the Japan Line's; representative on the New Zea-j land Eastern Shipping Committee Oir A. R. Turnbull) said that I the decision to use only the! Auckland. The New Zealand Ports t Authority and the Lyttelton Harbour Board had been info’-med of the committee’s! stand, a stand recently reaffirmed at the Harbours Association conference in Timaru last month. The decision was made because of various technical reasons, Mr Turnbull said. ‘The Japanese have had a fair bit of experience on the container scene.” he said. ‘They have sent several technical groups out and all have been unanimous in their preference for Port Chalmers over Lvttelton.” The committee would maintain » residual conventional cargo service at Lyttelton, said Mr| Turnbull.
