More scope for trade with N.Z.
Zra/orrrt Press .4.%s«*ctaf »r»w # WELLINGTON, May 9. The Minister for Trade and Industry (Mr Adams-Schneider) is expected to announce an expanded preferential trade deal for developing countries when he addresses the fourth I'nited Nations Conference on Trade and Development in Nairobi on Tuesday.
According to a statement released here today by the New Zealand Coalition for Trade and Development, the Minister indicated in Nairobi on Friday his intention to. make such an announcement. An economist. Mr Graeme Thompson, is attending the conference as an observer for the coalition. Today’s statement saysl that Mr Adams-Schneider will give his address against a backdrop of disagreement, between rich and poor nations on how best to tackle pressing development problems. It expects him to announce that only 300 out of 6000 tariff items will be excluded from an expanded New Zea-
land generalised scheme of preferences. This would mean New Zealand “welcomes” 5700 items compared with a list restricted to only 600 a few years ago. New Zealand’s interests and its role in U.N.C.T.A.D. have to be determined in the light of often conflicting views but New Zealand Government delegates stress' they intend to play a positive role on commodities, the generalised scheme of preferences and compensatory finance arrangements. Developing country producers are looking for more stable prices and easier access into rich markets for their primary and iprocessed products.
