Man no longer murder suspect
AUCKLAND. May 9. The police do not think that the man arrested in connection with the raping and wounding of a 22-year-old woman last weekend was involved in the murder of 13-year-old Tracey Patient. A 30-year-old man was arrested by detectives at a house in Otara after two people had telephoned th* police, saving thev had recognised him. said Detective Senior-Sergeant B. D. Mills. The 22-year-old woman was allegedly raped, strangled int< unconsciousness with a tie and sexually assaulted with < sharp instrument before hei attacker left her naked it Khyber Pass.
Tne arrested man will appear in the Auckland Magistrate s Court tomorrow morning, charged with causing grievous bodilv harm. The police have recovered jthe white car that was allegledly involved in the incident. The car prompted suggestions that the man might be jinvolved in the Patient homiJcide —a man wanted in that connection was reported to have driven a similar car. Detective Inspector M. G. ; Charles said tonight that •members of the homicide Isquad had spoken to the ■arrested man. The man heading the injqqiry, Detective Inspector B. F. Scott, would return from •Wellington tomorrow and •'would make a final decision. ■ said Inspector Charles. But at jthis stage, it looked as though i the man was not involved in the death of Tracey Patient.
