National speech contest results
(N.Z. Press Associations TIMARU, May 9. Chris Ingram, a dentist from Tauranga, today won first prize in the Toastmasters International national speech contest held in Timaru. This month he will fly to Sydney to compete against the two Australian district representatives. Second place went to David Gore, of Hastings; and third to John McCarthy, a farmer of Oamaru. Ingram’s winning address
was entitled “women are people like us” and was on the subject of women’s liberqtion in modern society. The contest had earlier been declared open by the Minister of Education (Mr Gandar) who told the convention that many good opportunities were lost in life because people could not communicate. Toastmasters were just one step toward better communication. The speech-evaluation contest was won by Tim Wood of Taranaki. John Haughie of Hamilton took second place, to Max Smith of Christchurch, third.
