City carsfail
The “Witkar” system of “pick-up-here,” “leave-it-there” city cars introduced in Amsterdam about two years ago has proved a failure. Motorists have shown a preference for using their own cars, in spite of congestion and parking problems, rather than the electric runabouts. One complaint is that the runabouts, at 6c a minute rental, are too expensive. Initially, it was hoped that several hundred of the plastic bubble-cars would be in use by now: in fact, the total on Amsterdam’s roads has stayed at only 35.
