Maintenance collection

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) CANBERRA. The Australian Government has introduced new regulations to make it easier for wives to enforce maintenance orders on defaulting husbands, the AttorneyGeneral, Mr Robert Ellicott, said yesterday.

j Mr Ellicott told Parliament that a Chamber Magisi trate will now have the ! power to make the default- ; ing husband pay maintenance through garnishees or the seizure of property. The Attorney-General explained that under the Family Law Act, these orders could only be made by a Superior Court after the wife made application backed by an affidavit.

But under the old divorce laws, maintenance orders were handled by Courts of Petty Sessions. Under the new regulations gazetted this week, .a wife ; can obtain a summons from a Clark of Petty Sessions rej quiring the defaulting husband to appear before a Magistrate, who can then ; order ways of collecting maintenance. I “This should go a long (way to assist deserted wives iwho are unable to get their ! orders for maintenance enforced,” Mr Ellicott added.
