‘Russia more threat’

The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) returned home today with the firm belief that Russia poses more of a threat to world peace than China.

After a month-long overseas tour that included a short visit to China, he said: “I don’t see any threat at al! from China.” He said he was reasonably’

well convinced that China’s whole attitude was defensive. The whole world, however, was opposed to Russia’s expansionist policies. Remarks he had made about the Russian naval presence in the Indian Ocean were factual and were not merely designed to help his reception in China.

“The fact is, over a period of less than a decade, Russia has created what was essentially an on-shore navy

into by far the strongest naval force in the world,” Mr Muldoon said. Even if numbers of Russian vessels in the Indian Ocean had not increased, their quality, in size, capability, and the number of nuclear ships, had. “The Indian Ocean could become a Russian lake if the Americans were to withdraw. Fortunately the American Congress has decided not to do this,” he said.
