No taxis, so took bus

CN.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 5. An 18-y ear-old seaman who took a bus yesterday, appeared in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court today charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle. Colin Ralston Walker pleaded guilty to the charge before Mr G. P. Monaghan, S.M. Sergeant M. W. Sleeth said that yesterday evening the defendant took the bus from Bunny Street. Further on he stopped to pick up two hitch-hikers, who told him they were going to Johnsonville. The sight of an airport bus heading out of town in the wrong direction aroused the suspicions of a traffic officer on patrol. The officer saw it pick up two persons. He followed it, and a few minutes later was told by radio it had been taken unlawfully. The driver was arrested, but the passengers, two boys hitch-hiking to Johnsonville, released.

Counsel for defendant, Mr J. V. B. McLinden, said Walker was a man of some judgment and would not normally appear in court. He arrived in port yesterday after being at sea for some time. Mr McLinden said the accused had tried to get a taxi but could not, and was alone in a strange city. He was fined $2OO by the Magistrate.
