Canterbury coach nominated

Mr Russell Ward, who has given fine playing, coaching and administrative service to three Canterbury clubs, has been nominated for the position of New Zealand Rugby League regional coach in the South Island. His application has been supported by the Canterbury board of control and has been forwarded to the national council. The position is a new one, following the recent restructuring of the code’s coaching scheme. Mr Ward was a member of Linwood premier squads which won club championships in 1968 and 1970, was previously in the Papanui first XIII, and later captained and coached Shirley. He has been on the committees of all three clubs, and has been involved with provincial coaching schools since 1969. A grade B coach in New Zealand, Mr Ward last year successfully sat the Australian grade 3 coaching course by correspondence and is also a Canterbury 19years representative selector.
