Some cuts fair — P.T.A.

Some cuts in Government expenditure on education were fair, the National President of the New Zealand Parent Teacher Association (Mr V. J. Welsh), said in a statement today.

He emphasised, however, that the association would refuse to accept any measures where the well-being of children, or a teacher’s efficiency, would suffer. The association regretted that cuts in education announced by the Minister of Education, (Mr Gandar) were necessary to save sBm he said. But every responsible New Zealander understood that some cuts were fair because of the economic situation.

“We suggest, as a fundsaving method, that the excellent publications of ‘Education,’ and ‘Education News’, be temporarily suspended,” he said. “The curtailing of advisors mileages are particularly dis-

criminatory against rural schools, and as such we strongly object to this type of forced saving.” There was clearly a moral obligation to live within our means Mr Welsh said.

But the association’s national body would keep a close watch on how cuts might reduce the efficiency ofschools or teachers.
