Soldiers to meet in June
Former soldiers who served with the 20th Battalion and Armoured Regiment, will have the chance to renew old aquaintanceships when the battalion's seventh national reunion occurs at Queen’s Birthday week-end.
The battalion fought in Greece, Crete, North Africa and Italy during World War 11. Men who served with it include Mr Charles Upham, and a former Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Guthrey). The reunion will begin on Friday, June 4, with a ball at Addington Raceway. About 400 people are expected to be present during a visit to Burnham Military Camp the next morning. Demonstrations of modern army equipment and facilities were given by the Army during a similar visit at the battalion’s last reunion in 1972.
Later that evening the reunion proper will occur with a function at the Addington Raceway. On Sunday, a parade of former members of the battalion will march from Latimer Square to the Cathedral for a commemoration service conducted by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt). A wreath will later be laid at the Cenotaph. followed by a farewell cocktail party at Addington.
