The Krasnoyarsk Dance j Company has performed in 24 countries during the last 15 years and the members’ fiery Siberian dancing has won them international prizes. The company of 100 dancers, whose ages range from 20 to 23 years, is one of the youngest dance companies in the Soviet Union. Their Christchurch programme from May 2 to May 4 has almost 20 dances such as the “Round Dance with Clicking” flashing fiery performances, and smoothflowing dances like the “Lyrical Roundelle” and I “Kaiinka.” “The dances we perform! are rooted in the Siberian scene. Siberian sources of dance melodies and rhythms are virtually inexhaustible. But we are not only trying to perpetutate the dance folklore in its original form. We are also trying to present modern Soviet Siberia in our dancing.” said Mikhail Godenko, the company’s artistic director. The photograph shows members of the company performing a Siberian folk dance.
