Police raid stops ferry

CK.Z. Press Association* WELLINGTON, April 26. A police raid today on the crew’s quarters on the Cook Strait ferry Arahanga caused the cancellation of tonight’s sailing. Electronic equipment, liquor. cigarettes, and clothing were seized. Three men were arrested and will be charged in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court tomorrow with theft.

The Arahanga’s 8 p.m. sailing was cancelled. Seamen said it was in protest against the way the police made the search, but union sources said the vessel did not sail because the arrests left the crew three short, and no replacements could be found. The Arahanga will sail at 11.20 a.m. tomorrow. Detective Chief Inspector A. W. Baker said tonight that the raid was made after complaints about cargo pillaging.
