T. J. Wellsmore League honours
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Fifty-five years of involve* ment in rugby league was rewarned on Sunday when the New Zealand Rugby League honoured Mr T. J. Wellsmore (Hawke's Bay) with life membership. Mr Wellsmore began playing in 1921 and represented the South Island in 1934 as a wing threequarters before serving on the Wellington Rugby League and then the council of the N.Z.R L He was the Canterbury deputy delegate before representing that province on the council for 13 >ears from 1962-75. In the latter \ears he was also the N.Z.R 1., deputy chairman and chairman of the rules and interpretation committee. Two weeks ago he was honoured with life membership of the Canterbury Rugby League and since retiring in Hawke's Bay has been persuaded to assist in forming a referees association in Hastings. Contrary to expectations, the Auckland Rugby League remit to the annual meeting of the N.Z.R.L. that inter-league transfer fees for players be increased was passed with only slight opposition and amendment. The A.R.L. proposal that the fee required for a national representative be $l5OO and that a provincial representative.

Mr R. G. McGregor was re-elected president of the N.Z.R.L. Discus.—Faina Melnik of the Soviet Union broke her own world women’s discus record in Sochi, near Moscow, with a throw of 70.50 m. Her previous record was 70.20 m Boxing.— Elisha O ? Bed, of the Bahamas, retained the World Boxing Council light middleweight title against his Ivory Coasts challenger Shea Robinson in Abidjan.
