ORTHODOX EASTER

(N.Z P.A Reuter—Copyright) MOSCOW, April 26. Russian believers in their thousands packed Moscow churches until the small hours to celebrate the Orthodox Easter, ignoring official press condemnations of their festival. Scores of police were on duty controlling the crowds outside Yelokhovsky Cathedral — where the sermon was read by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church (Patriarch Pimen) — and elsewhere. At the Church of the Resurrection, in north-east Moscow, police roped off the church and allowed only elderly worshippers through the cordon.

Foreigners who attended services in Moscow have reported no repetition of the ugly scenes that marked the Easter festival until a few years ago, young Communist militants barracking the believers. In his Easter message, which was also read out at other churches, Patriarch Pimen called on Orthodox believers to “Join Christians of other Churches in helping to bring about peace on the earth.”
