Student teachers plan rally

A rally to protest against the Government’s decision to refuse the January cost of . living order to first-year teacher trainees is planned to be held in Christchurch next week.

This was the decision of a meeting yesterday of more than 200 primary teacher trainees who are in their first year at the Christchurch Teachers’ College. The students decided that they must take a firm stand against the Government’s decision and also the possibility of further cuts in Government expenditure on education expected to be announced this week. The protest rally which may be held in Cathedral Square next Monday was considered by the meeting to be a major way in which the public could be informed of the “tardy” manner in which the Government was treating education. It would also be a positive way to gain the feeling of students from all sections of the Christchurch Teachers’ College so these could be conveyed to the annual meet ing of the State primary teachers’ organisation, the Educational Institute, in May.

Ski-ing nuisance. — The Taranaki Harbours Board chairman (Mr S. D. Hayton) has said that water ski-ing may be banned at the port after a Japanese freighter had to stop when two skiers fell ahead of the ship.—(P.A.)
