Arson at Hanmer mortuary

Christchurch detectives are investigating an attempt to burn down the mortuary at the Queen Mary Hospital, Hanmer Springs. The attempt was made on Easter Monday; a wall was set on fire. Police say an accelerant was used to start the fire, but it went out before any serious damage was caused. The police said if the building had not had a concrete base the damage could have been much greater. There might be a connection betv. een this fire and the fire which damaged the staff quarters of the Hanmer Lodge hotel late last month, police said. That fire was deliberately lit, and despite extensive police inquiries no-one was arrested.
