Man slit dog’s throat

6V.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. A man slit the throat of a Great Dane to breakup a dog fight, Mr P. M. Brown. S.M., was told. Anthony Vernon Charles Reardon, aged 30, a securityofficer, admitted and was convicted on a charge of mutilating the dog. Sergeant B. S. Boreham said that when Reardon returned home from work at 2 a.m. today he found the dog on the footpath with a chicken bone. He went inside but went out later when he heard his dog and another dog fighting over the bone. He tried to separate the dogs, then went inside to get a knife. He attempted to cut the dog’s throat and caused a four-inch long wound to the neck. The dog bolted up a side street and when the police arrived half an hour later there was a blood trail leading to a house 100 yards from the Reardon home. Reardon asked the police if he could make another attempt to kill the dog and the police agreed — if he did it humanely. Reardon said he had “done this sort of thing before” and went under the house with a knife. When he emerged a little later he said the dog was dead, but when the police checked they found the dog was still alive and bleeding profusely from wounds to the neck. The dog died 15 minutes later. Reardon told police he “could not bring himself to do it.” Reardon was intoxicated but not drunk. He told police he went into a fit of rage when he saw the dog with the chicken. The Magistrate noted Reardon had a history of anti-social behaviour, with previous convictions for fighting and assault. He was remanded on bail until May 7 for probation report and sentence.
