Many treated at hospital

Staff at the accident and emergency department of Christchurch Hospital were kept very busy during the four days of Easter. They attended to 821 people. On Good Friday 202 people were treated, on Saturday 208, Sunday 203, and on Monday 208. The Medical Superintendent (Dr R. A. Fairgray)

!said that there was a steady I stream of people, but there [were very few accident cases. Most of those treated were people who could not get in touch with their local; general practitioner or had not bothered to. The occupancy rate at Christchurch’s three main hospitals averaged 84 per cent for March. The chief executive of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Mr J. G. Laurenson) said that the figures were much the same as last year. Dr Fairgray said he was surprised thar the rate was so high, as there had been little pressure on medical beds. Surgical beds had been used to capacity. General practitioners had been very busy, but for nearly four months there had been little demand on medical beds.

Road toll.—To noon yesterday 165 traffic deaths this year had been reported to the Ministry of Transport. At the corresponding time last year the total was 175. The toll this month was 27 compared with 25 at the corresponding time last April.— (P.A.) '
