W.D.U. still unbeaten

The truncated third round of the Rothmans National Soccer League at the week-end — three matches were postponed because of the Air New Zealand finals — left the lead unchanged. Wellington-Diamond United remained the only club with a 100 per cent record when the promoted side from the end of last season beat Eastern Suburbs, 4-2, at the Basin Reserve. Christchurch United won the only other league match played, defeating Stop Out, 3-2, at Queen Elizabeth II Park, and moved up to second place. For the third match in

succession W.D.U. came from behind to win. At one stage in its game against Eastern Suburbs W.D.U. was down, 0-1. Eastern Suburbs struck first with a headed goal scored by Gary Jenkins; Jeff Strom led W.D.U.’s recovery when he scored with a hard drive from 10m out which gave Suburbs New Zealand representative goal-keeper Praven Jeram no chance. When half-time came both teams were locked at 1-1. For the first 15 minutes of the second half W.D.U. kept up the pressure and with two goals by Peter Hill went to a 3-1 lead. Late in the game Jack Schurer, on the field for an injured Clive Campbell, scored for Suburbs and the pressure went back on to W.D.U. to hold on. Late in the game Hill scored his third goal of the games with a simple header after a free kick. Results and league table: Christchurch United 3 (K. Doornenbal, N. Moran, K. Mulgrew). Stop Out 2 (S. Malcolmson 2)—half-time 2-1. Wellington-Diamond United 4 (M. Hill 3, J. Strom), Eastern Suburbs 2 (G. Jenkins, J. Schuurmanj—half-time 1-1.
