Yesterday's bread

Sir. — While doing my shopping this week I came across a fact new to me. Apparently, “yesterday’s bread", that is, bread not sold by the retailer on the day of delivery, is dumped. As a consumer. I am interested to ask the following question: Is it possible for this bread to be sold on the following day, labelled as “yesterday's bread.” and offered perhaps at a lower price? — Yours, etc.. ANN THORNTON.

April 9, 1976. [The manager of Stacey and Hawker, Ltd (Mr J. P. Devine) replies: -‘Government regulations prohibit retailers from returning unsold bread to bakers, and consequently retailers have to bear the loss, which is not inconsiderable, of anv bread they have not sold. There is nothing to prevent retailers from selling this bread at a lower price as ‘yesterday’s bread'.")
