Satellite city suggestion

Diamond Harbour could become a satellite city of 50.000 people now that the Rolleston plan had been abandoned. the chairman of the Christchurch Civic Trust (Mr D. J. Hewitt) said on Monday night. Mr Hewitt said that it would be an ideal site: “tremendous" for tourism as the scenery was superb; plentv of water sports were offered: and access was made easy by the harbour and the road tunnel. Another road tunnel would also be necessary, he said, and should be started at once. Mr Hewitt said that drainage would present no ; problems either as once treated, the sewage could “all go into the harbour.” He suggested that the area could be divided into two sections: from Diamond Harbour to Governor's Bav could be residential, and from Governor’s Bay to Lyttelton, commercial and industrial. Peacock Fountain were studied yesterday by the board The alternatives were in the middle of the river or on one of the lawns. Mr Hewitt said that the subcommittee which made the study felt that the middle of the river was the best site. The fountain would be floodlit, and if it were on the river it could be seen from both Fendalton Road and from the house at Mona Vale. Mr H. Rhodes, a member of the board, will discuss the siting with the chairman of the Mona Vale Management Committee (Mr R. W. J. Harrington). A small cast-iron drinking fountain which was built in 1907 was also discussed at last night s meeting of the board. The secretary (Mr J. J, Brandts-Giesen), said that the fountain, which is on the corner of Brougham Street and Colombo Street was in danger of being demolished when the road w’as widened. Mr Brandts-Giesen said that the fountain was built to commemorate the Coronation of Edward VII, and he wopld like to see it preserved
