Soviet fishing queried
(Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, April 13. The activities of Soviet fishing vessels in international waters off the New Zealand coast had been raised in the course of a recent discussion between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Soviet Ambassador (Mr O. P. Soly - aniov). the Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Talboys) confirmed today .
“The Ministry expressed concern about the need to conserve fish stocks off the New Zealand coast, in the light of activities bv large. Russian trawlers off Cape Campbell and in the Canterbury Bight,” Mr Taiboys said.
“Although these operations were outside the New Zealand fishing zone, thev were within the area which is likely to become New Zealand's economic zone as an end result of the Law of the Sea Conference.
“The Ministry asked that the Soviet Union consider the need for conservation in this area, and the Ambassador confirmed that he would convey this message to his Government. The Ambassador also emphasised that the Soviet Union was generally concerned about conservation, and had drawn attention to the considerable Soviet experience in this field.” Mr Taiboys said.
