Chatham Islands’ problems
Sir. — 1 reply to A. M. Harris’ letter on Cr Skellerup’s visit to the Chatham Islands. Cr Skellerup was there on behalf of the Canterbury Museum, of which he is chairman, to foster the building of a local museum to preserve and protect Moriori artefacts and other historic items. He was on annual leave. If, out of goodness of heart, he helps the islands’ residents, it is surely not for anybody to criticise him. Probably the member of Parliament for Lyttelton was busy elsewhere; however, I know Miss Dewe has made at least two visits to the islands. Finally, should Cr Mary Batchelor represent the Pegasus ward and the Avon electorate when there are so many problems in her ward? Why criticise the Deputy Mayor for taking a Iworking holiday? Cr Skellerup is entitled to spend his spare time as he wishes — even in helping the Chathams. — Yours, etc,, M. M. BISHOP. April 12. 1976.
