Surprise win in billiards
Dave Meredith (Shirley I) had a surprise win over the Canterbury champion, Brian Klrkness (Riccarton), when the A grade inter-club billiards competition opened on Saturday. Shirley won this match 2-1 but Graham Foster, a member of the Rlccarton team, a new entry in the competition, at least had the satisfaction of making an excellent break of 92 —easily the best of the day. Results were:— A grade:— Shirley I 2 (Meredith 200, Henderson 154, L. Adams 200) beat Rlccarton 1 (Kirkness 127_ Foster 200, Cooper 140). Hornby 2 (Simons 200, Canovan 86, Houghton 200) beat Richmond II 1 (Dilks 97. Pitcaithly 200, Hall 171). Post Office 2 (Golding 135, Thompson 200, White 200) beat Richmond I 1 (O’Callaghan 200, Carson 158, Anderson 131). Woolston 2 (Martin 181. Giles 200, McGinlay 200) beat New Brighton R.S.A. 1 (Greaves 200, Cormack 171, Linton 131). Kaiapoi 3 (Burney 200, Adams 200, Helsen 200) beat Shirley II 0 (Grant 130, Angus 146, Willman 182). Hornby beat Officers’ Club by default. Breaks: Foster 92, Meredith 44, Simons 53 and 62, Pltcalthley 46. Thompson 43, O’Callaghan 44.
