Park man wins Mt Cook race

A Mt Cook National Park headquarters mountaineer, C. Thompson, won the highest race in New Zealand — 3.6 miles, from the Mt Cook air terminal to the park headquarters. The course is at an altitude of 2500 ft. Thompson covered the distance in 22.8 minutes. In second place was J. Sweeney, who is making an ecological survey at Mt Cook. His time was 22.3 minutes. M. Robinson, a Mt Cook Company builder, was third (22.43 minutes). The first of four women home. Miss R. Dyer, of Twizel, completed the course in 33.25 minutes, and was placed twentieth. Saturday’s event was held in fine weather. Twenty-three contestants climbed 500 ft, and the last half-mile was from Glencoe Lodge to the Hermitage, a climb of 250 ft. Last year Sweeney won the race in 21.30 minutes in a field of 39.
