Disaster for arts predicted
CX.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 12. Some important sections of the arts faced disaster under the Scrooge-like policies of the National Government, the Opposition spokesman on sport, recreation and the arts, Mr E. E. Isbey, said today. In a written statement, he said this was made abundantly clear by the Minister for the Arts (Mr Highet.) when he spoke at a meeting of the Music Federation on Saturday. “He made the absurdly philistine suggestion that the arts must be based on a cost-benefit analysis, as if one can measure culture by the tinkle of a cash register. “This confirms the fears expressed by prominent people in the ' arts over the fast few weeks that the National Government intends using the Muldoon axe on cultural progress in New Zealand.
“This is shameful,” Mr Isbey said. “The National Government has decided that man should not live by bread alone by its callous increase in the price of.a loaf, so let’s have something more for the quality of life about which we have heard so many platitudes by the National Party.”
