Infected ears in Northland
(N.Z. Press Association* AUCKLAND, April 9. An .Army medical survey in the upper part of Northland has shown that many Maori children are threatened with permanent deafness because of ear infection. Two Army medical squads examined 453 children in primary schools in the Kaitaia area early last year.
The territorial officer in charge of the group. Lieuten-ent-Colonel B. Linehan, of Hamilton, said that it was found that 50 children had already suffered some hearing loss because of the condition known as “runny eafs”.
The children examined were both pakeha and Maori, but most of the children affected were Maori. Thirteen cases of runny ears required immediate attention, three of these would almost have had hearing loss; without prompt treatment. In some cases, it could have been total hearing loss, he said.
The medical name for the infection is otitis media. It in an infection of the inner ear, and may eventually cause the ear-drum to burst. In most cases the ear-drum heals but the resulting scars cause deafness.
