Queens Park Rangers ' looked favourites to win the English soccer [league title for the first time in their 90-year history after beating Middlesbrough, 4-2, on I Saturday. minutes later. Two goals by Bruce Rioch put Derby back in the game but Tueart netted another for City before Colin Todd scored Derby’s third : with eight minutes remaining. Manchester United’s dreams of a double were dented by a superbly-lobbed goal from Ipswich’s Mick Lambert in the thirty-fourth minute and shattered by two goals in five minutes near the end from Trevor Whymark and David Johnson. The defeat of Manchester United sparked off a series of pitched battles between United and Ipswich fans in the streets around the ground after the match. About 30 fans were arrested. Leeds United, the only other club in contention on the last lap of the champion.ship race, were held 0-0 by Tottenham Hotspur. Sheffield United, already destined for division two next season, scored only their fourth win in 38 matches by i beating West Ham, 3-2. The individual scoring (honours in the first-division programme went to John i Richards, whose second-half hat-trick helped Wolverhampton Wanderers to a crushing 15-0 victory over Newcastle United. . In the second division promotion race, Sunderland returned to the front of the 'queue with a convincing 3-0 home win over Blackbum Rovers. Bristol City were | pushed down to second spot I after being held to a 2-2 (home draw by Chelsea. At the foot of the table, Portsmouth are now unable to avoid relegation after their 5-2 defeat away to Oldham Athletic. Hereford drew 0-0 with Millwall in their big division three promotion battle to hold on to the top spot ahead of Cardiff, who won 1-0 away to Crystal Palace. Brighton jumped from fourth to third
