Tennis title to Parun

(N.Z.P. A. Reuter—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG.

Onny Parun of New Zealand beat Cliff Drysdale of South Africa to win the classic tennis tournament in Johannesburg on Saturday, the Associated Press reported. Parun demoralised the South African with an aggressive display of attacking shots that gave him a 7-6, 6-2 win.

Initially, Parun’s tactics cost him many points and Drysdale jumped into a 4-1 lead in the first set. But by keeping on the pressure and dictating the pace of the game, he survived two set points at 5-6 and went on to win the tie-breaker. The second set was a lacklustre affair, which belonged entirely to the New Zealander, who went into a 3-1 lead by breaking Drysdale’s service in the fourth game. Parun won $14,000.
