Two teams clear in badminton
The Canterbury A| grade badminton competition is only two rounds old. but already there is evidence that : the battle for the title! lies between only two teams. Railway 1 and Knox. On Saturday, Railway 1 had its second successive clean-sweep, and Knox, which won six of its eight matches, moved clearly into second position, three points behind. However, the three North Beach teams, especially when their top players are all available, should continue to ensure that the leading pair do not have things all their own way. It was North Beach II that checked Knox on Saturday. Alison Ross showed good early season form to clearly beat Sandra Chapman and Miss Ross earned North Beach another point when she teamed with Betty Maitland in the ladies’ doubles. The best win of the day was achieved by the former North Beach player, Terry Perry, who is now the top woman for Railway 11. She was impressive in beating Diane Erikson in straight games, and she later beat Miss Erikson again in a testing ladies’ doubles. Railway 1 left no doubt that it would be the team to beat by the way it demolished Hagley 1. All eight matches were won in straight games, and Geoff Miller was very sharp in winning the top men’s singles against Brian Williams. The Hagley II team also lost 8-0. It played better in the doubles than it did in the singles, but was still no match for the experienced Canterbury 1 combination. Points are:— Rail wax- 1 28, Knox 25, North Beach 111 21.
