AUCKLAND-
The 45-footer, Inca, ard the 42-footer, Gerontius, have tied for the Rothmans Golfi Cup off-shore racing chain, pionship. Gerontius levelled the seeies on points when she placed second in a drifter of a 55-mile around Kawua race, the final heat of the nine-race series at the weekend.
Inca was third, and this was enough to prevent Gerontius snatching the title with a magnificent end-of-season run. Going into this race, both boats were level on 1211 points, but Inca had a I*point advantage when the worst three were dropped in the best six of nine series. Gerontius picked up the 17 points needed to tie the championship but was unable to build on that as the ultralight conditions caused a string of boats to withdraw as the race developed into a marathon. Inca was the better boat in the fresher conditions earlier in the season. She finished with a did not start/3/ 1/4/3/172/4/3 series for t nett 1101 points. scored heavily in the lighter second half of the contest, and tide it uo with a d.n.s./C 2/6/2/2ZI/1/2 record.
