Wrestling popular with ' kids’
Competitors from 22 schools took part in more than 70 bouts at the Horticultural Hall when the Canterbury Amateur Wrestling Association held its first “kid wrestling” tournament for youngsters between the ages of five and 10 years. The participants were divided into six weight categories, from group A (heaviest) to group F (lightest). The bouts were supervised and refereed by senior wrestlers, officials and parents. Prize-winners were:— Group A: Anton Turner 1, Peter Coulson 2, Michael Waites 3. Group B: Craig Ilton 1, Derek Scott 2, Gregory Rose 3. Group C: Michael Loader 1, Brett Marshal] 2, Tony Hickland 3. Group D: Matthew Guild and Steven Corbett equal 1, Jo'hnny Videler 2, Glenn Pickering. Group E: David Ching and Paul Gread equal 1, Darren Kesha 2, Robert Hannan 3. Group F: Adam Wilson 1, Jason Hickland 2. Steven Hefferen 3. Another “kid wrestling” tournament has been scheduled for June 12. Tennis.— Bjorn Borg of Sweden won the $13,600 Brazil World Championship tennis tournament in Sao Paulo, beating Guillermo Vilas of Argentina, 7-6, 6-4. Rugby league.— Sydney results: Penrith 18, Western Suburbs 18; Manly-Warringah 31, CanterburyBankstown 21; Eastern Suburbs 17, Newtown 13; St George 15, Cronulla-Sutherland 12; South Sydney 19, North Sydney 14; Balmain 28. Paramatta 12. In Brisbane, Canterbury’s Amco Cup rival, Eastern Suburbs, beat Souths, 18-9.
