Melbourne team strong

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The capable handicap horse Seven Forty Seven will spearheard a team of seven which the Matamata trainer, K. A. Old, will campaign in Melbourne this winter.

Seven Forty Seven is one of the top weights in the Hawke’s Bay Cup on Saturday. Earlier last month he won easily in both the Taranaki Cup and Caltex Cup at New Plymouth. Tile other candidates for the trip are Bartlesville Count Mannlx, Diophon, Smackover, Karric, and a maiden which has not yet joined the stable. Count Mannix, Diophon which won over hurdles at Te Aroha last Saturday for a fellow Matamata trainer, N. Cravzford, and Karrick, a former inmate of B. F. Deacon’s stable, will be raced over fences.

Bartlesville, a three-year-old half-brother to Satin Doll, has been spelling since the spring, and Smackover, a son of the former Australian speedster. Vain, was a brilliant winner in his last start at Matamata, on February 28. Seven Forty Seven is a qualified hurdler—although he has not raced over fences—but Old says there is only a slight chance of his being tried in this role in Melbourne, The team will be flown from Auckland on May 6 and be quartered at Skye, about 40 miles from Melbourne.
