Willie Win striking in win at trials

Willie Win came into favour for Saturday night’s big sprint when he gained an all-the-way win in the main race at trials held at Addington Raceway yesterday’.

Obviously improved by the race in which he finished third on Saturday night, Willie Win impressed by the manner in which he began yesterday. He was in front in a few strides after starting from No. I 1 at the barrier and paced) the 2600 m in 3:25.9, the last! 800 m in 58.8 and the last! 400 m in 29.2.

Freeman Holmes sprinted Sole Command up to join Willie Win near the 400 m and they opened up a short break over Commissioner. Willie Win soon shook off Sole Command and, without being pushed, he won handily by a length and a half. Commissioner beat Sole Command by two lengths for second, with another two lengths to Cyclone Lad, which was making ground solidly near the line. Junior Armbro did well for one in his class to finish fifth, ahead of Eclipse. Final Curtain, Dream Away and Captain Harcourt. Ad Infinitum broke at the start and checked Captain Harcourt, which in turn went in on Final Curtain.

Captain Harcourt and Final Curtain raced at the tail of the field until the 800 m, with Captain Harcourt following Final Curtain up. Both paced their last 800 m in about 58.5, showing that they are ready for bold efforts in Saturday’s race, which will be a lead-up to the Easter Cup a week later.

Sunseeker shaped attractively in preparation for the Graduation Stakes on Saturday when he ran Yukon John to a neck in the parade for two-year-olds. Ruling Lobell was a neck away 7 third, clear of Blueburn. The winner took' 1:1.4 for his last 800 m. Scottish Heath was checked just after the start, showing speed afterwards. Trotting Stake* Harvey Wilson showed his fitness for the Trotting Stakes on Saturday when he finished second, three lengths behind Globewater, in the race for intermediate trotters. Jack Smolenski gave Harvey Wilson a rousing run, having him in front for a time and then on the outside just behind Globewater from the) 800 m. He did not push him over the last 100 m. The winner took 3:33.4 tor the 2600 m, the last 800 m in 1:2.2, and the final 400 m in

1 31. Only bad luck will bring about Harvey Wilson’s down- ! fall on Saturday. I Several Trotting Stakes ! candidates contested the race I for maiden trotters, but none i of them went well enough to ! suggest they will keep close Ito Harvey Wilson. Manchu, (which finished fourth to Clubmoor, Lesami and Question Mark, did best of the three-year-olds with Tania Wood sixth, Orient Brent eighth, Catto ninth and the Aucvkland horse, Crestwood, last after two gallops. The winner took a slow 3:44.3 for the 2600 m, the last 800 m in 1:2.8 and the final 400 m in 31.8.

I Parawin shaped pleasingly [when sixth behind Mendip Hill., in the race for CO and 'CI pacers. He was not asked (for an effort and was doing i his work well at the end. He is to race at the Manawatu (meeting on Monday when •Peter Jones will drive him. ■Mendip Hills is to race at : the Roxburgh meeting where I he should do well. i Robert Garrison showed ; speed to come from far back lat the straight entrance to | finish second, ahead of Jasmine Lady and Wily. Hasy win Stars and Stripes, a disl appointment last Saturday when he broke and was checked, gave a dashing display to win the race for Cl and C2 pacers. He took the lead with 550 m left and raced right away to win by nine lengths in 3:26.5 for the 2600 m. the last 800 m in 58.6. Stars and Stripes is to race in the Metropolitan Three-vear-old Championship on Saturday week. He will not be a forlorn chance in spite of the rich company. Prince Twinkle showed his fitness for the Electric Stakes on Saturday when he won the race for C2 to C 4 pacers in 3:28.7, the last 800 m in 1:3.8. The race was marred when Olga Korbut tipped her driver. Freeman Holmes from the sulky with 1100 m left. About 200 m earlier a rein broke and Holmes lost control of the filly. Kishmul ran on stoutly for second, ahead of Freight Train and Saucy Jack. Rodnev Dale, a splendid third on the first night, trotted boldly to win the main event for horses of her gait. She followed Darky Forbes and came on to beat that runner by a length and a half in 3:32.7, the last 800 m easily in 1:3.4. Rodney Dale will be a top chance on Saturday.
