Education week for West Coast schools

> While most other priImary schools are slowing down towards the end of the term a group of West Coast rural (schools is organising a unique education week which will attempt to have education “go publlic.”

The education week, ending on April 30, is being o-ganised by the Midland Line Teachers’ Discussions Group —- a group of teachers from small schools such

as Arthur’s Pass. Rotomanu, Lake Brunner, Dobson and Stillwater. Working with advisers in rural education, the teachers group is an informal one which meets once a month to talk over educational problems and to co-ordinate sports and other programmes and the use of equipment. One of the organisers of the education week, Mr D.

; G. Stone, of the Arthur’s I, Pass School, said the aim :! was to show people of the (West Coast some of the i things done by schools and ■ other educational organisations. FAIR All primary schools, play 'centres, kindergartens and secondary schools have been asked to participate in the week and one of the highlights will be an educational fair to be held in the Victoria Park Trotting Ground in Greym-juth from noon to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. April 28, and Thursday, April 29 and from noon to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 30. “The Greymouth RotaryClub has offered to underwrite the cost of the education week but we hope the

income from firms taking part in the display in Victoria Park will cover all costs,” Mr Stone said. Window displays will be set up in a number of shops in Greymouth and special programmes are being planned by Radio New Zealand’s commercial station in Greymouth, 3ZA. TOP SCHOOL

A top-school competition based on ideas from TVl’s Top Town competition will be held for teams of 12 from each school with each team competing in six novelty events. Many of the schools taking part will be open to the public and the Blaketown School will use the week for the official opening of its multi-purpose room. The week is also being used to publicise the new audio-visual resource centre for schools in Greymouth. This is being developed as part of the rural advisers centre in Greymouth and it will eventually have a collection of materials such as movie projectors, copying machines and movie cameras which no single rural school would be justified in buying.
