Autumn ramble
Sir. — Now that the leaves
are getting thinner on the trees, and the grass and pavements are covered with them, we know that autumn is in the air. Nearly four weeks ago I walked to the Botanic Gardens to look at the trees, to see how they where faring, and if I expected to see carpets of leaves then I was disappointed, because the leaves on some trees had hardly changed, while those on others were merely droopy-looking, as if exhausted by their grand effort of spring and summer. Now I have made another trip to the gardens and seen that the trees there are in the same autumnal state as those in and around Christchurch. I have heard people round me say, "I’m sick of work!” but sick or not it is a pleasure to appreciate nature when not being rushed off your feet. — Yours, etc., CECILIA FRASER. April 6, 1976.
